  • To hit fairway woods from tee. Either as a shorter alternative to the driver or ability to hit the ball more safely.

Personally, I have in my bag a driver, 5 wood and a 7 wood. 7 wood is used on those holes where I should not hit more than about 210 yards. So, I will be in the best position for an approach shot. In some holes you can’t hit a driver. For example, dogleg and when there are bunkers straight ahead, you may want to use a fairway wood. 7 wood is the easiest club I have in my bag to hit from the tee and it rarely goes offline.
 
Replacing the long irons
 
For many, it is much easier to hit a fairway club than to use 3 – 5 irons. Especially when it comes to longer approach shots or long transport shots. The bigger club head on a fairway wood compared to an iron club makes it easier to get the ball up in the air. Another feature is that it is not sensitive to miss hits. An iron 3 is not particularly forgiving to miss hits.
 
As a guide you can say that a 5 wood roughly corresponds to a 2 iron. A 7 wood corresponds to 4 iron and that a 9 wood roughly goes as far as a 5 iron. Of course, it depends on your swing speed as well.
 
Reach par 5 holes in two strokes
 
Few things on a golf are as wonderful as the feeling of hitting the green on 2 shots on a par 5. And be able to go ahead and make the eagle putt. For this, you often require a fairway wood. If you are considering getting a fairway wood, then you have no problems getting a 3 wood off the fairway.
