TaylorMade Milled Grind HiToe Wedges

🥇 Most forgiving Golf Wedges

TaylorMade Milled Grind Hi-Toe Golf Wedge

What are the features of TaylorMade Milled Grind HiToe Wedges?

The HiToe wedge is definitely a pro-inspired model but can also benefit amateurs. The bounce is on the mid to high side, which makes it more forgiving at impact, especially on bunker shots. The strike is not very consistent on open club faced strikes from tight lies, but mostly the turf interaction was very clean thanks to the design on the sole. The added spin on open faced shorts was very clear on flops from the rough and bunkers, where the grooves in the high toe area, provides added spin.

  • The design provides a higher centre of gravity for a lower ball flight with increased spin, with full face scoring lines for better ball consistency from the rough.
  • Another great design is the high bounce on edges and channel mid sole, this gives less friction through the turf or sand on sole moves, and prevents from excessive digging.
  • An advanced heel, toe relief and trailing edge give maximum flexibility around the greens, with three trapezoid formed pockets in the cavity for optimal weight distribution.
  • The wedge is delivered in an excellent copper finish, and comes with a premium KBS Hi REV 2.0 115 gm steel shaft, and a Golf Pride grip for maximum on the course performance.
  • The Most forgiving Golf Wedges in the market.

How to buy good Golf Wedges? Golf Wedges Buying Guide for mid handicappers and beginners.

golf wedges buying guide
  1.  What is loft of a golf wedge?
  2.  How much bounce is enough on a wedge?
  3.  What are different finish on wedges?
Of all the different clubs in your golf set, wedges are key to short game.  You need a good wedge game to make your rounds more enjoyable. There are several things to consider when choosing your wedges.

It is everything from how the greens on the courses you play and what´s the shape your own strike. Usually, you can have 3-4 wedges in your bag. Personally, I have a PW 46° (Pitching Wedge) and then a 52 °(Gap Wedge), 56 ° (Sand Wedge) and a 60 ° (Lob wedge).

This gives me the best spread of distances in the bag and for all distance from 125 yards and inside. A good drive on a hole often means that I am within wedge distance. Thus, it is quite clear that it is important to have a wedge that is right for me. You are likely to use the wedges many times during a round. What is loft of a golf wedge?

golf wedges types loft
You can say that the wedges are those that have a lofts that’s below 45 degrees. Often loft looks like the pictures above.

Pitching Wedge (PW) is the wedge that has least loft. Most often, a PW comes along when a new iron set is purchased. But it can be an alternative to replace this with a wedge that is designed in a similar way to the others in the bag. A professional usually uses it from about 120 yards.

If you buy a set of clubs that extend all the way to SW, this often brings with it a gap that is quite large from 48 – 56 degrees. To cover this distance, one often adds a wedge that is often called Gap wedge (GW) or Approach wedge (AP). Other players like myself just call it by their degree number which is 52 in my case. It is called gap wedge because it closes the gap that exists between the other wedges.

The next step is a sand wedge (SW). As the name implies, this club is often used from the bunkers. The loft is large enough to be able to get the ball properly. This club also often has a high bounce to assist in bunkers. A tour player often hits his SW around 100 yards.

The last type of wedge is a Lob wedge (LW). These start at 60 degrees and extend as far as 64. It is not common for players to have as much as 64 degrees on a wedge in their bag. A player like Phil Mickelson sometimes uses such a club. A slightly less lofted LW of 60 degrees is also uncommon. It can be a club that helps a lot when you really need to have the ball high in the air for a short strike. This club is my personal favourite in the bag as it provides good opportunities to get out of trouble. A strike with a 60 ° often goes around 85 yards for a tour player.

How much bounce is enough on a golf wedge?

golf wedge bounce
As simple as possible, you can say that it is the curved part of a wedge’s sole that controls how much it bounces. For example, in sand or rough. How angled this part determines how much the club bounces. The angle extends between 2 and 18 degrees.

Low bounce

Low bounce is suitable for hitting from hard surfaces. The club will not bounce as much and the sole is narrower. The front edge of the club is lowered which makes it easier to get a clean hit. Low bounce is also suitable for those who want to be creative in their game. For example it is easier to open the blade to get more loft. If you have a shallow attack angle when you hit the ball, it is also best suited with a low bounce. A low bounce club often has up to 1-6 degree bounce.

Medium bounce

If you play a new course, it is the best to get a wedge that has a bounce angle that is somewhere in the middle. It should still be good, for example, to open the club face. The bounce on these wedges is usually between 7-12 degrees.

High bounce

These wedges are designed for those who play on soft surfaces or sand. The higher angle means that the club does not want to bury itself in the same way. It is good to strike from soft sand if you prefer to hit the ball with a closed club. The bounce on these wedges is usually above 12 degrees.

What are the different finish on Golf wedges?

golf wedges finish color
When buying a wedge, the finish a club has is also something to consider. First, let’s say that cosmetics are usually pretty much all about the looks for the wedges. The choices are often between black nickel, chrome, beryllium copper, rusty or oil can.

It is often talked about that a certain finish is softer than another and it should make a difference. But in general, one can say that the differences are that some do not reflect light. This can be an advantage when playing in the sun, which is sometimes reflected and disturbed. Some of the surface layers are also intended to rust and this could then give better playing properties.

The best advice is to buy a club with decent design and does not reflect much light, when playing in sun.

Q&A Golf WEDGES!

What to consider when choosing a golf wedge for BEGINNERS?

Wedges are important part of any golfers, especially for high handicappers and amateurs.

For beginners, the loft, bounce and the sole grind are most important. Each of those parts fits a special purpose. The loft influences the backspin that the club can impart on the golf ball.  The bounce is important part of the wedge as it stops the head from getting stuck in the dirt.  The grind of the sole influences the bounce of the golf ball.

Things to consider when picking a golf wedge for MID HANDICAPPERS

Golf wedges are important part of an average or intermediate player´s short game.  An average player has to look at  5 factors before purchasing a wedge. They are loft, bounce, grind on the sole, grooves, and shaft. Each of those factors fits a special purpose. The loft influences the backspin that the club can impart on the golf ball.  The bounce is important part of the wedge as it stops the club head from getting stuck in the dirt.  And the sole grind affects the bounce of the golf ball you hit. Grooves will provide that extra backspin and the shaft will help you with better accuracy.

What is a NON-CONFORMING Golf WEDGE?

A golf wedge that does not conform with the USGA rules, is considered illegal or non-conforming. As per USGA rules, If you alter the width, shape or depth of the grooves then you render the club non conforming. If you ever use a groove sharpner to scrape metal off the clubface would indicate that you are altering the club. Also with the exception of putters, clubs must be at least 18 inches long, but no longer than 48 inches.

Main factors in picking a golf wedge for TIGHT LIES

A tight lie in golf is what the golfer faces when his golf ball is on a spot where there is very little grass under the ball.

Low bounce lob wedges can be used to hit from tight lies near the green.

What to think about when choosing a golf wedge SET?

Professionals carry 3 or 4 wedges in their bag, for variation and selection to their short games. The important factor in choosing a set of wedges is to make sure that there are no huge gaps in loft between the lowest lofted iron in your set and the first wedge and then also between wedges. Ideally you should try to keep the lofts gaps to around 4 degrees between each club. Please check the golf wedge lofts section for different wedge options.

What to consider when choosing a CAVITY BACK golf wedges?

For a beginner, golf wedges with a cavity back can enhance performance and give more forgiveness.  It is a big help when it comes to avoiding dig, whether you are in the fairway, rough or sand. The larger club head is also designed to you more confidence.

Tips to pick a golf wedge for WOMEN

Women typically have different average heights and varying levels of strength.

A lightweight wedges would be ideal for women to swing with greater speed, thus getting more power at address. Graphite shafts and titanium club head inserts could make  the wedges much lighter.

Things to consider when picking a golf wedge for SENIORS

Lighter the club, the faster the swing. Faster swing speed means more distance.

Seniors will benefit from having the CG (Centre of Gravity) on their clubs as low as possible. This will produce more height in the trajectory, also increased forgiveness on off centre hits.

What to think when choosing a golf wedge for BACKSPIN?

You need a high spinning golf ball and fresh grooves to put spin on wedge shots. A wedge with new grooves that have a milled or rough clubface is ideal for spin. Spin is caused by the friction between the golf ball and the clubface. If your wedge is old and the grooves are worn out, then the friction just won’t be there.

Things to consider when picking a golf wedge for chipping

It’s important to master golf chipping around the green. You can chip the ball from a wide variety of situations around the green. Depending on the position of the hole on the green, you can either use a short irons, if you want a lot of roll or a sand wedge or lob wedge if you want the ball to stop relatively quickly. You can use spin to stop the golf ball when chipping with a golf wedge, especially from a good lie.

Which wedges are better for golf pitching?

To improve your golf pitching, it is important to use wedges with correct bounce. We do not want the club to dig in to the ground and take huge divots. For softer ground conditions, use higher bounce and for harder gound(summer), use low bounce wedges. Pitching and gap wedge for longer shots. Sand wedge and lobb wedges for shorter shots.
